Positive Pitched Roof

The term pitch and slope are often used interchangeably which is incorrect.

A 12 to 24 pitch is expressed as 1 2. This type of roof is more commonly seen in residential homes as the space directly underneath it is an attic their pitch or slope can be steep or gradual depending on the home s design and layout. This pitch sheds water well but is not too steep you can still have good roof overhangs to protect the building and the roof is just shallow enough in pitch that you can walk on the roof to service it. Roof pitch or slope is a measure of vertical rise to horizontal run expressed in inches per foot. A roof with a 6 rise for every 12 run has a 6 per foot or 6 in 12 pitch. Roofs steeper than 5 and 12 are difficult to walk on. My personal favorite pitch for a roof is a 5 and 12.

Roof pitch refers to the amount of rise a roof has compared to the horizontal measurement of the roof called the run. It s easier for water to drain on a pitched roof compared to a structure that s more flat. Pitched roofs come in a variety of styles such as gable cross gable and hipped all of which are sloped to different degrees. Pitch is thus the ratio of the rise in inches to a 12 inch run and is often expressed using a semicolon for example 6 12.
