Head flashing is a critical detail for any window installation.
Proper flashing at the bottom of hardie siding and tyvek.
Caulking around the top and sides of window can often provide a temporary fix but over time the caulking will fail.
Nail it to the sidewall or glue it if nailing isn t possible.
Hardie says it s fine.
Slip in the flashing.
Use flexible flashing tape below the pipe overlapping the house wrap.
Or install a rain screen using say 1 2 x 1 1 2.
The homes i built then still look brand new today.
Cover with cap flashing.
That should pop the nail head out far enough so you can pry it out.
The water then runs off the flashing because it can t go up the flashing as it extends up behind the siding.
Slide a piece of house wrap into the slit.
You may need to pry out siding first.
When using a house wrap like tyvek r or typar r it is not as easy to weave the flashing under the wrap as it is with felt.
Or put at least one layer of grade d paper over the tyvek then the siding.
Install the hardie over the tyvek tyvek says it s fine.
To flash a flanged vent.
Never install without a good wrb if tyvek is too pricey use at least 60 minute paper it cheap and way way better than nothing.
To repair a hole.
The top edge of window fin or z flashing should be protected by an overlapping membrane.
If nails are in the way pull them out.
Install flexible flashing tape above the pipe tucking it under the house wrap.
I have several choices.
Lap it over the bottom house wrap and under the top.
Lift the bottom shingle and slip in the kickout flashing.
Slip the back flashing under the siding at least 3 at the top and the sides.
If the kick out and step flashing can t tuck behind the siding screw on cap flashing to cover it then caulk along the top.
Pry the siding out near a nail then push the pry bar against the nail as you partially tap the siding back in.
For example if the windows are flashed incorrectly then siding must be removed around each window to re flash them correctly and properly integrate the flashing with the sheathing wrap such as tyvek.
Cut a horizontal slit.

After all the reading i have done i m still unsure of installing the hardie lap siding directly to the tyvek.
